Dr. Tomasz Janowski, Senior Research Fellow of UNU-IIST and Head of the UNU-IIST Center for Electronic Governance contributed to the high-level academic coordination meeting on "Fostering a Critical Development Perspective on Open Government Data" in Brasilia, Brazil on 16-17 April 2012. Organized by the International Development Research Centre (IDRC), the Web Foundation and the Berkman Center at Harvard University, the meeting "brought together 20 renowned policy-oriented academics coming from diverse geographical areas and backgrounds in order to discuss an interdisciplinary research agenda on the impact of Open Government Data (OGD) initiatives under political, economic and social dimensions". In particular, the meeting aimed at "discussing a policy-oriented research agenda that would ensure that open government data programs in the global south: 1) foster greater quality of openness, 2) support citizens’ rights and 3) are inclusive. The key issues explored where and how open data - particularly in the developing world - could challenge democratic deficits, create economic value and foster inclusion". The participants also expressed their "commitment to the further development of the research agenda and demonstrated their interest in participating in a research network in different forms".
