As the different UN biodiversity-related conventions each impose reporting requirements on their parties and also stress the need for environmental compliance related information, meeting these requirements can place substantial burden on governments, particularly those with limited resources.
A feasibility study conducted by UNEP-World Conservation Monitoring Centre in 1998 considered approaches towards development of a harmonized information management infrastructure for the treaties within their existing mandates.
Its purpose was to consider how the secretariats could improve effectiveness and efficiency in gathering, handling, disseminating and sharing information. As a first step in enabling this process, there is a need for information flow to a national repository from a grass root level.

On the occasion of the World Biodiversity Day, UNU-IIST Center for Electronic Governance will contribute to the global discussion on effective monitoring and evaluation of global compliance to multilateral environmental agreement through Information and Communication Technologies, through a panel discussion. The panel will also examine the issue regarding harmonizing of environmental law enforcement related information for strengthening Environmental Governance.

The panelists will include stakeholders from Government, Research Institutions, Industry, Civil Society and the United Nations.
